Skyfall; the new James Bond movie logo

James Bond: SkyFall is apparently the title for the new Bond flick. Released during the franchise's 50th anniversary it will be the third film featuring Daniel Craig as the super spy.

Speculatiion on the movie's title heated up a few days ago when a marketing company working for Sony began buying up the rights to various web adresses, such as skyfallmovie.com.

The title has been met with mixed reactions around the web. As a bit of fun I quickly put together a logo of how 'Skyfall' might appear on film posters and posted it on a few Bond forums. I fudged the release date simply because I wanted '007' to appear somewhere. Some of the comments I have gotten back are along the lines of "Really hated the title Skyfall, but since seeing your logo for it, I think it might be pretty cool after all!" Thanks guys!

'Smallville' Sketches

Ever since I was a kid I have loved the Superman story. I love the biblical themes best presented by the first movie in 1978. Marlon Brando brought epic scale to a story of someone sending his only son to Earth as a saviour of mankind. Richard Donner's version of Superman and now his new version of Superman II provided a weight to the character.

The TV series 'Smallville' really captures the spirit of those movies even more than the recent Superman Returns. The effects are incredible for a TV budget, and so far we've had over 200 hours of Superman, growing from a high school kid to being a fully fledged reporter at the Daily Planet.

Tom Welling, who looks so much like a young Christopher Reeve, has certainly grown as an actor during the show's run and is adored by just about every female fan I know.

These same fans often don't have very much to say about Kristen Kreuk, his female co-star - Lana Lang - who was adored by just about every male fan I know until Erica Durance became a regular playing Lois Lane.

I don't get involved. I'm happy just to gaze at the gorgeous Allison Mack as Chloe Sullivan each week!

We are currently mid-way through series nine. I'm hoping we get to see a 10th series. Every month or so we get together for a Smallville night as we catch up on the latest shows as we do for 24 and Lost. With the new series of V as well as Flash Forward and maybe next year an American version of Torchwood there'll be plenty of scifi to keep us going should Smallville end its run, but I will miss it. Its been great fun!

Pop-Art style Portraits

Smallville Art - Allison Mack

Just a quick post relating to a portrait I painted of the actress Allison Mack who plays Chloe Sullivan on the US TV series 'Smallville'. I put a quick video together to give a feel for my working method... which primarily involves wine I must admit :)

I love Smallville and I'd say Chloe is my favourite character. I might actually upload some pencil sketches I've done relating to Smalville shortly...

Painting My Chemical Romance

Torchwood: Pop Art

My Torchwood Pop Art painting was one of my earliest works and has since become a true signature piece, being one of my most popular works!

All this week the mini series Torchwood: Children of Earth is being shown nightly on BBC1. Made largely by the same production team that bring us Doctor Who, Torchwood has an exclusively adult format. Torchwood is a secret organisation charged with saving the world on a daily basis ...usually in Cardiff!

Torchwood's darker style and design lend itself very much to my neo pop art style of painting. I confess I really enjoy creating these sexy paintings of Torchwood characters, my favourite subject being Gwen Cooper, played by gorgeous welsh actress Eve Myles.

Of course, the number of characters was reduced by two at the end of the last series, so it will be interesting to see how the format holds with a smaller team.

Martha Jones and possibly Mickey Smith, both characters from Doctor Who were apparently going to be joining Torchwood for the current series, but I think the actors had moved onto other projects away from the Doctor Who productions.

During the second series episode in which she married her long suffering fiance there was a scene where she danced with Jack This was after a previous scene where the characters almost kissed. This theme is represented in these two canvas paintings (above and below), each measuring 3ft by 2ft.

David Tennant's charity auction

My painting raised £1550 !

I was asked to produce a painting of David Tennant by a fan. Standing on the mountains of Gallifrey, the city of the Timelords in the background, under images of the previous nine Doctors in the Gallifreyan sky. The brief was quite specific and the result was only partially successful I felt.

The painting was given to David Tennant as a gift. He auctioned the painting in aid of the charity Accord, announcing it through his official website. Signed by the actor and placed on ebay the painting eventually raised £1550!

I photographed the painting prior to adding David Tennant as I loved the sci-fi nature of the scene! I had great fun painting the snowy lanscape which up close is really quite rich with colours.

The Daleks - Pop Art

Themselves now a pop art icon, the Daleks featured in the series second story and in 1964 the country was dominated by 'Dalekmania'! Though simplistic in design their singular personality fed the imagination of children sending them scurrying 'behind the sofa'.

The new series inevitably features annual appearances of updated, though thankfully, faithfully designed Daleks.

These paintings depict the Daleks as they appeared to viewers in the 1960s.In fact, most of these artworks features designs slightly modified for their appearance in two feature films released in the late 60s as a response to their popular appeal.

Featured in last year's series of DOCTOR WHO, the cutest 'monsters' ever brought to television!

It was an interesting diversion at a time when 99% of my artworks were strictly done in a black and white pop art style. Painted in acrylics on a stretched canvas 40 inches wide, the Adipose were great fun to do! Basically they are blobs of fat, partying!

Painting: The 10th Kingdom

What happens after "happily ever after". About a decade ago there aired a US TV mini-series called "The Tenth Kingdom".

It started with a New York waitress who finds herself transported through a portal to a parallel world; The world of the Nine Kingdoms. This world is the one spoken of in fairy tales. Now 200 years after the adventures of Snow White, Cinderella etc and evil has returned. We follow a sweet bunch of characters as they try to find a way back to New York; the Tenth Kingdom.

Exceedingly well made, filmed across Europe. Great fun. The Wolf was everybody's favourite character. Its still one of the best things ever made for television. Check it out on Amazon.

My painting is very much based on the marketing art released at the time to promote the series. It features a fairytale style castle in the top half, while within the watery reflection can be seen New York.

In the promotion art for the series the twin towers dominated the city, so I have opted for an alternate view, centred on the statue of Liberty.

The top painting is my most recent version, with deeper and more vibrant colouring. The bottom illustration is the painting I did first, as a present for my girlfriend.

Audrey Hepburn, a Pop Art Icon

Audrey Hepburn Pop Art, handpainted on canvas measuring 40 inches by 30 inches.

Audrey Hepburn (1929 – 1993) born in Brussels and moved to England with her Mother after World War II. Audrey learned ballet, became a model and started to appear in the theatre and in movies.

Hepburn's first role in a motion picture was in the British film One Wild Oat in which she played a hotel receptionist. She played several more minor roles in Young Wives' Tale, Laughter in Paradise, The Lavender Hill Mob, and Monte Carlo Baby.

Audrey won the Theatre World Award for her performance in the Broadway show Gigi and was then offered her break-through part in the movie Roman Holiday, for which Audrey won an Academy Award for Best Actress.

She would be nominated for four more Academy Awards during her career for roles in Sabrina, The Nun's Story, Wait Until Dark, and Breakfast at Tiffany's.

From her Wiki entry: "Hepburn's Holly Golightly in 1961's Breakfast at Tiffany's became an iconic character in American cinema. She called the role "the jazziest of my career". Asked about the acting challenge of the role, she replied, "I'm an introvert. Playing the extroverted girl was the hardest thing I ever did." She wore trendy clothing in the film designed by her and Givenchy and added blonde streaks to her brown hair, a look that she would keep off-screen as well."

She also appeared in Charade (One of my favourites) and My Fair Lady.

Soon after Hepburn's final film role, she was appointed a goodwill ambassador to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). Grateful for her own good fortune after enduring the German occupation as a child, she dedicated the remainder of her life to helping impoverished children in the poorest nations.

Audrey died in 1993. She was 63.

U.S. TV Pop Culture

Heroes: Favourite character on most people's list has to be Hiro! Best image in my opinion is right back in the pilot episode, where Hiro first attempts long distance teleportation. Opens his eyes and finds himself in the middle of Times Square New York. "Yatttaaa!"

I've painted this image many times. I've settled on a style which, while painted with acrylics, has an almost watercolour feel to it, due to the washes, especially of the light reflecting on the wet ground.

My first pass was done in pretty much a pop art style, with just a few of the colours picked out. Actually, it might have been one of the first works I sold on-line. It had an almost comic book look about it which I think was somewhat in line with the artwork seen in heroes.

I later repainted it several times, though each time I found I was moving away from the pop art look until eventually arriving at a more poetic, if not real world feel.

I painted a few fan-art canvases featuring mostly Hiro and Claire, while experimenting with different painting methods.

One popular feature of the series are the Isaac Mendez paintings, rendered in real life by comics artist Tim Sale. Mr Sale is actually colour blind so paints his artwork in black and white, before handing it over to a colourist who finishes the work.

The most famous of which is probably "The Kiss", again an image from very early on in the series. It looks kinda nice on a square deep edge canvas!

I can't believe Lost is already about to start its final season! The series now would be almost ubrecognisable to anyone who was watching the first couple of seasons. Who'd have thought back then that so much time would eventually be spent away from he island.

Sawyer turned out to be far more popular than I would have imagined. I just didn't get his character to begin with. He wasn't even an anti-hero. He was just a coward. How far he's come.

Jack was originally going to be killed off in the pilot! Unthinkable now since he's at the centre of the show. Kate was cool at the start but I'm afraid I haven't really noticed her lately. There is a very good reson for this though....

I have yet to paint her. My favourite character is Elizabeth Mitchell's Juliet. Okay, I admit. Its not her character at all. I just think she's so easy on the eye I could just watch entire episodes of her smile. Like many people, I can't really follow the plot anymore, but that's just because whenever she isn't on the screen I completely lose interest! And as well as being in Lost, she's now one of the leads in the new 'V' remake airing later this year. I cannot wait!

And one of my favourite all time series has just 2 more years to go. '24'. Though its a testement to its success that Fox are able to make such a commitment in an industry where series are usually renewed a season at a time. And after that, the rumour is that a feature film will round out the adventures of Jack Bauer; the U.S's own James Bond!

JB was an obvious character to paint and I've done so several times now. A shame President Palmer is no longer in the series as I would have loved to paint him too. I may yet someday. Next series I'm looking forward to seeing Katee Sackoff fresh from her role as Starbuck on the incredible Battlestar Galactica.

Football Pop Art (That's soccer baby!)

Favourite players, Favourite teams, Favourite managers... Handpainted Football Pop Art canvases especially for loyal supporters and fans. Commissions for football stars really are popular and any player or team can be done on request. Just ask!

The first three football themed paintings I was ever asked to do were of the Legendary manager Bill Shankly, classic Everton player Dixie Dean and modern day superstar Steven Gerrard.

When I first put these up on Facebook, to advertise the kinds of things I can do, I got several emails from people telling me what a shame it was that I was only able to paint players from the Liverpool area!

I was rather taken aback that people would imagine that an artist who paints Mersey players would have difficulty painting other teams!

I promise anyone who is reading this, if you support ManU, or Blackburn FC, or even Accrington Stanly - it really don't make a heck of a difference! You see, I'll let you into a little secret - I aint really a footy fan.

But hey, if your partner is Football mad, or you have a room dedicated to following your favourite team, then why not get in touch.

Prices vary according to size. It costs just £95 for a 2foot square portrait, like the painting of David Beckham here. And no, I don't only paint David. He's just an example.

If you want something bigger, like a great big dynamic pose of your favourite player complete with team colours, then for something 40inches wide it costs £195. That's over a meter wide on a huge canvas, stretched over a wooden fram, with painted edges. So like all my works, no need for framing!

Shipping is included in the price within the UK, or for an additional £35 for the United States and Canada. For Europe its around an additional £15.

My paintings are done in a neo-pop art style, made up of several shades between black and white, often with a flash of your team's colours. The end result looks great!

INVISIBLE CAR

Sara Watson, a 22-year-old student at the University of Central Lancashire, spray painted a battered Skoda Fabia to blend in with the surrounding car park at the Preston campus.

The 'invisible' car is now used to advertise the recycling firm who donated the vehicle.

ARTISTICALLY DRIVEN

I first came across this artist on Facebook about a year ago. Ian Cook, a Birmingham artist is now famous in the world of Formula 1 and motor racing events for his unique painting method using only radio-controlled cars.

He has gone from creating 'Popbang sculptures' in his studio, to successfully marketing a type of 'performance art for hire' as he puts on corporate shows.

He has had national press attention covering some of his recent works, and is at this year's F1 at Silverstone according to his Twitter entries. Last year he created a very cool 3-storey portrait of F1 champion Lewis Hamilton in London.

Jack Vettriano Beach Studies

Born 1951 in Fife, Scotland, Vettriano took up painting as a hobby in the early 1970s, when his girlfriend bought him a set of watercolours for his 21st birthday. His earliest paintings, under the name "Jack Hoggan", were copies or pastiches of impressionist paintings – his first painting was a copy of Monet's Poppy Fields.

His paintings are reminiscent of the film noir genre, often with romantic or nude themes. His original paintings now regularly fetch six figure prices, but he is thought to make more money from the sale of reproductions.

His most popular work, The Singing Butler, sells more posters and postcards than any other artist in the UK. On 21 April 2004 the original canvas of The Singing Butler sold at auction for £744,500.

COMMISSION

I received a request to paint a 3 picture triptych featuring a composition of Vettriano's characters, taken from 'The Singing Butler' and 'Mad Dogs and English Men' - the original paintings shown below.

Some time earlier I had done a similar work, again as a 3 piece, featuring elements from some of his paintings. These were smaller in size, and predominantly yellow, in order to match the decor of the room they would eventually hang. Painted in acrylics, on stretched deep edge canvases approx 14 inches tall each. For my second commission I was able to use larger canvases which afforded greater detail, along with an option to paint a less stormy blue sky than on Vettriano's original version. Again, whereas his were oil paintings, mine were painted in acrylics, allowing for a much faster work pace and drying time.

I divided the figures from the original works and sketched a compositional layout, making notes regarding weight of tone etc.

Once the canvases were primed I set to work blocking in the base colours. These would be applied in 3 thin layers, completely covering the white canvas with colour, without losing the texture of the canvas weave. After working out the outlines for the figures I blocked them in with either white or black, depending on the lightness of the eventual tone.

Once the shapes are blocked the real enjoyment comes from studying Vettriano's use of light and shade, to suggest fully anatomical figures, through just the merest glimpses of features, as in the lady in red's upper back. The gentlemen, while practically silhouettes, carry personality and a masculinity, despite the simplicity of subtle highlights on their costumes.

Once the paintings were completed with all their detail, along with nicely balanced skywork and wetlook beach, the canvases were sprayed with several coats of clear satin, giving a sparkling, oil painting finish. The satin sheen increases the overall contrast of the work, enhancing areas of shade and most especially light!

All three canvases were painted simultaneously, with each stage being applied across them. At the same time, attention to detail is paid to the edges also, since the deep canvases will hang aligned unframed. Here are the paintings with their edges revealed:
